Nexus Mods Announces Mod Author Donation System
Nexus Mods, one of the largest mod hosting websites known to man, has announced an intricate mod author donation system. It will be launched in the first quarter of 2018, and it’s supposed to allow the site to share ad revenue and donations with creators based on unique downloads. On paper, it seems like a great way for mod creators to make some money from their hobby, while avoiding the idea of paid mods or relying solely on donations from players.
Every month, the site owner will put an amount into a pool, expected to be between 5 and 10 thousand dollars, and users will be able to contribute to the pool if they so wish. At the end of the month, the money will be converted into donation points ($1 into 1000 DP at this point), and a script will calculate how many points each mod author gets based on unique downloads of their creations.
The creators will be able to spend their donation points on the Nexus Mods storefront. It will allow them to exchange points for PayPal funds, Amazon gift cards, games on digital distribution platforms like GOG and Steam, software licences and such. There’s a lot more to it, but this is the short version. If you’re interested in the nitty-gritty, we suggest you head on over to Nexus and check out the announcement. Here’s how the site’s owner, DarkOne, describes their expectations:
Nobody is going to get filthy rich this way, but as the owner puts it, it’s “going to be a way for Nexus Mods, and the users of Nexus Mods, to donate to and thank all the mod authors on Nexus Mods collectively”. Think of it as buying your favorite mod creator a cup of coffee by simply downloading their work.
